I am a contemporary, interdisciplinary artist whose practice explores witchcraft, folklore and modern paganism to reflect on feminism and the cycles of women’s lives. Working primarily with paper and fibre I use traditionally feminine crafting techniques such as embroidery, crochet and felt making to make two and three dimensional textured, tactile drawings. I frequently use the Surrealist process known as automatic drawing in which works are unplanned and led by the unconscious. This drawing practice allows me to experience my body and its place in time through action, embedding it into the work itself, each line connecting medium, maker and moment. Focussing on the maid, the mother and the crone archetypes as symbols of women's experience, my work reflects on the cycles of time and nature tied to the bodies of women to celebrate and make visible key stages of female experience in a world which seeks to objectify, control and suppress them. Like the women who have traditionally used them, artforms such as embroidery and crochet have been marginalised as domestic ‘crafts’ for old ladies in order to diminish them so I consider their use in a fine art context an act of subversion.
I completed the Leeds Arts University Diploma in Visual Arts (DIVA) and Access to HE Diploma with distinction in the summer of 2020. Her final major project works were exhibited in the LAU summer exhibitions in 2019 (in person) and 2020 (online). Since leaving university I have worked as a freelance artist and have exhibited at galleries and museums across Yorkshire, the Midlands and in London, and have been featured in international publications and online exhibitions. I have also worked on projects with Leeds City Museum, Leeds Playhouse and the British Library. I regularly work with local community groups to support health and wellbeing through creativity and am a member of The Art Doctors, a West Yorkshire based artists' collective who playfully encourage the role of art and creativity in wellbeing. I am a member of the Diva Collective, a group of West Yorkshire based emerging artists working collaboratively in multidisciplinary practices.
